PET PROOF THE HOME

So, you decided to get a pet. One that will run to you to welcome you home. And your heart will jump when your pet runs to you. Until, Spot starts knocking over the flower vase, scratching the carpet and tearing the curtains just to get to you.

PET PROOF THE HOME

So, you decided to get a pet. One that will run to you to welcome you home. And your heart will jump when your pet runs to you. Until, Spot starts knocking over the flower vase, scratching the carpet and tearing the curtains just to get to you.

Pet proofing your entire home is the best way to enjoy many more years with your pet (and your furniture, plants, glassware and vase). Here is how to make your home pet-safe:

• Identify the areas where you can let him run freely around the house. Section off those areas with barriers such as baby gates.

• Look for those tight spaces that he can crawl into, like under the sofa. Cover those crawl-spaces with either boxes or wooden blocks.

• Fragile things, such as large vases, should be kept out of reach. Shorten table-runners if your precious glass vase is on it.

• Wrap cables and cords with tubing to prevent your pet from tripping or chewing the cables. Tubing can be bought from a DIY store.

• Invest a scratching post so that kitty has a more interesting to scratch than your sofa. If you have a puppy, save your Nike’s and Manolo’s by giving him a chew toy.

• Keep poisonous plants in high and hard to reach areas. Pets can get curious and chew on its leaves. In the same line, detergents and chemical-based cleaners should be kept under locked securely. Or install child-safety locks because pets can teach themselves to undo latches.

Pets, like any other animal, are curious by nature and will explore the entire living space. Keep them occupied with toys and things that can attract their attention. Spending lots of time with them will also make it easier for training.
