 HOW TO PREVENT A FIRE

Let’s rethink on what we know about fire. We know that our life and lifestyle is dependant on it. And yet, if left unchecked, fire becomes a hungry beast. It’s like a tiger cub, cute when small but will maul you when it gets the chance.

So, for a day, the Sunrise Fun Zone with the help of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (BOMBA), held a talk on how to prevent such a thing from happening.

Held at the Sunrise Showcase on 7 November 2009, the event saw 130 participants from the Sunrise Mont’Kiara community, Sunrise staff and the Boys’ Brigade. All of them came away with four main points:

1. Fire Is Dark, Expect Not To See

2. Smoke Will Kill You, Not The Flame

3. The Heat Alone Can Kill You

4. You Don't Have Time In A Fire

What they also picked up are practical advice on how to prevent fires from happening. Here are 10 tips that you too should know:

i. Place cooking stove at least 3 feet away from the nearest object
ii. Keep away candles from flammable items, children should not play with candles without adult supervision
iii. Do not smoke in the bedroom when drunk, drowsy or sleepy
iv. Use a heavy ash tray, ensure that the lighted tip is fully extinguished before disposing
v. Keep matches, lighters and other igniters out from children’s reach
vi. Always inspect gas pipes and connectors
vii. Do not allow children or pets to play near stoves that are in use
viii. Do not plug multiple socket connections into one plug point
ix. Inspect electrical wires for damage from time to time
x. Use mosquito coils and containers that are safe; keep it away from flammables and children

Check back for part 2, where we will touch on techniques to save yourself in a fire and how to be always ready in case a fire breaks out.
