Over 250 residents of Sunrise Mont’Kiara celebrated the Cherry Blossom festival and experienced the tradition of ‘hanami’ (flower viewing in Japanese) with family members and friends at Sunrise Fun Zone.

The event featured exciting family games such as miniature golf putting, mini bowling and the ring toss game, with attractive prizes to be won. One of the main attractions of the event was Fun Fishing where the challenge was to catch a fish with a ‘paper net’. Successful participants get to take the colourful guppies home as pets.

The highlight of the event was the cultural performances such as booming Japanese Taiko drum presentation by the Wadaiko Syo group, dainty Japanese traditional dance and ‘Tea-Pyeng-Moo’ solo dance by Madam Kim Won Ja, signifying peace.

The Korean Traditional Music Association of Malaysia delivered a soothing repertoire of the ‘Samul Nori’, a native Korean percussion music using four different instruments, followed by Captain 6, a young Japanese hip-hop dance troupe showcasing their talents and slick moves, even as the crowd cheered them on.

The Sakura Festival is also a chance to wear a Yukata (a Japanese cotton Kimono) and Korean costumes. This proved popular among residents from India, Iran, Malaysian, Taiwan, America, Portugal and United Kingdom who then had their photographs taken against a backdrop of cherry blossoms.

To enhance the cultural experience, guests were treated to authentic Japanese and Korean fare such as sushi rolls, hanami dango (Japanese sweet dumplings), pajon (Korean pancakes) and fried noodles.

Residents enjoyed the affair and relished welcoming spring in a different but cosy environment. Many expressed joy in celebrating the event while getting better acquainted with each other and building new friendships.
